You may notice we haven’t been posting that often lately, me especially. Partly because it’s just been tough. We have all sorts of wine stories in the queue; trips to Portland, Carlton, Italy, ZinFest and tons of reviews that are still to come.
But we did start doing something new. It’s called First Friday. And it’s all about sharing wine!
We started as a way to avoid my late mother’s Estate Sale. Watching vultures pick over my mother’s belongings from across the street was not my idea of a good time. (Thanks for that, bro).
What is First Friday?
The First Friday of every month we host a wine tasting. And you can too!
We pick a theme, or a wine varietal. The first month we did Bordeaux and pulled several bottles out of our wine locker. This month was California Zinfandel and Syrah. We chose wines we love like Bedrock Wine Company, Twisted Oak, and our new favorites Miller Syrah and Black Sears Howell Mountain Zinfandel.
If there happens to be a virtual tasting already scheduled with us that day — then that will be our theme If not, Joe and I choose.
We invite friends, co-workers and other wine lovers — some are local sommeliers. We provide food — to teach about pairings and to avoid dram shop issues. We send out e-vites a week in advance to remind people and get an idea of how many are coming. We like to keep it to about 20, so the invitee list changes. Each person is encouraged to bring one guest, so our circle of wine lovers grows!
Friends are welcome to bring a bottle of wine they have discovered and would like to share. It’s not required, because we always have plenty of wine. Sometimes near the end of the night Joe will send me to the “cellar” to get something special.
Last week we pulled a 2009 Châteauneuf-du-Pape. It was a little austere — and some people just couldn’t get past the “funk” especially after all those California wines. But one of my friends said, you know, you’ve just introduced a new wine to some that they might not have otherwise ordered in a restaurant.
Join us on twitter and Facebook.
Many of our guests are on twitter or Facebook. So we’re going to be posting pictures, tweets and thoughts about the wines we are tasting at each event. If you would like to join in, we will announce the theme a week in advance. That will give everyone a chance to pick up a bottle of something that goes along with our theme.
We will use the hashtags #AWBFirstFriday, #FirstFridayWine or #FirstFriday so you can keep up with us. We usually start around 7:30 p.m. Central and end at around 10:00 p.m. (That’s 5:30 – 8:00 p.m. for the West Coast and 8:30 – 11:00 p.m. for those of you on the East Coast.)
Our May Theme will be wines from the Pacific Northwest. We have some ideas on few bottles to feature, but there is always room for more. June, July and August themes are yet “to be determined.”
Wineries are Invited to Participate
If you represent a winery that would like to be considered for Another Wine Blog’s First Friday wine tastings, email me at Winewonkette and I will give you a shipping address for samples. We have wifi and a large screen so if you have related videos about your wines we would love to share it with our guests as well.
Next up: Pacific Northwest wines. We hope you will join us in celebrating First Friday on May 3rd!
