In California

This morning we piled our stuff into the car and headed for the airport on our way to California. The journey began without incident, traffic was light and we made it to the airport with plenty of time to spare. Everyone should sleep safe tonight knowing that our toothpaste and my nearly empty tube of shaving gel were righteously confiscated in the name of national security. What could my wife have been thinking to pack such threats in our bag? Luckily we were allowed to board.

As I type this I am listening to bunch of old reggae and ska tunes as we fly over the clouds filled with the excitement of the journey and the child-like wonder that looking out of the window of a plane inspires. Looking down on the white peaks of the clouds and the bright blue breaks between always reminds me of a beautiful frozen day on the shores of Lake Erie, where I grew up. It is a feeling both peaceful and nostalgic Jimmy Cliff singing ‘The Harder They Come’ makes it even better.

There are times when I hate to fly, but this isn’t one of those times. The perfect day, the great music and the anticipation of California, with its promise of sun, friendly people, fantastic food and wine flowing like water, are making this feel like the beginning of a wonderful adventure.

In addition to all of the events that the Wine Bloggers Conference has scheduled, we have gotten invitations to visit more boutique wineries than we can possibly visit in the time allotted. Some of our favorite vineyards have promised to deliver something “special” to our hotel for us to try. Other bloggers and exhibitors at the conference have emailed us with requests to get together over a glass or two. I do not know how we are going to manage even half of what we have planned for this weekend.

But first, we get to spend the afternoon in one of my favorite cities on earth; San Francisco. More on that later. Maybe we can replenish our evil and dangerous toothpaste and shaving gel supplies in the wicked city by the Bay.
