The Jessup Cellars 2015 TasteMaker Speaker Series returns on Thursday, April 9th from 7:00pm to 9:30pm with Busking ~ Taking it to the Streets with Author Heather Jacks, the award-winning author of The Noise Beneath the Apple. Jacks will share her vision and creative experience on what became a stunning, multi-media production that won Indie Fab’s Book of the Year- Performing Arts & Music in 2014.
Jacks recently received a grant to create the San Francisco Bay Area book featuring the region’s best buskers and has launched a Patreon.com campaign to fund the project. Local music sensation Billy Kingsborough, frontman for the rock group Kingsborough, will also join the conversation through both stories and song. Tickets are $35 each at CellarPass.com and include forum, live music, video screening, wine tasting and nosh. Ten percent of the evening’s wine sales will benefit Jacks’ new project.
“I am so honored that Jessup Cellars has given me a platform to share the story of busking from both a historical and contemporary perspective and to launch my Patreon crowd-funding campaign for the San Francisco Bay Area project,” says Jacks. “It’s also very exciting that Billy is performing, considering that Kingsborough will be featured in the new book!”
Dating back to antiquity, before the advent of recording and personal electronic devices, musical artists in every corner of the world performed in public as the most common way to make a living. Over the past several decades, with the ascension of digital music and the Internet, and thus the deconstruction of the music business’s economic model, contemporary artists of merit are returning to the streets for fiscal independence and success.
Jacks’ multimedia book, The Noise Beneath the Apple, which includes a full-length vinyl LP, celebrates this return to the streets. Along with an intimate and interactive forum with Jacks, Jessup Cellars will bring the project to life by immersing guests in the project’s music, the screening of its documentary short, as well as the video capturing the remake of Billy Joel’s single New York State of Mind produced by musical artist Keaton Simons. The screenings are sponsored by CellarPass.com. The forum also opens Jessup Cellars month-long exhibit of the book’s photography.
Frontman Billy Kingsborough of the rock group Kingsborough will lay down the evening’s soundtrack. From their early days of busking to stage and now studio, this independent group of musicians reflects the old school “working band” mentality with a heavy focus on raw performance. The Kingsborough sound recently caught the ear of Grammy Award-winning producer Jason Carmer (Third Eye Blind, Run DMC, Korn, Chuck Prophet) who refined and captured it for their first full-length album, The Night, The Grind, and The Woes. Released this past January, the album has remained in CMJ’s Top 200 Indie Chart.
